Top 5 Things to Watch
Sunday, October 6, 2024 4:56AM CDT

OMAHA (DTN) -- Here are the Top 5 things the DTN Newsroom is tracking for the week of Oct. 6. Watch for coverage of these and other topics through the week on our subscription platforms as well as on www.DTNPF.com.

Note that all report release times are Central Daylight Time unless otherwise noted.

1. Continued hurricane recovery: We'll continue to report on recovery efforts in the area hit by Hurricane Helene and related storms. If you missed some of our original, special coverage on how farmers and cattle owners in the southeast are dealing with the extreme weather challenges, you can check out these stories:

-- "Federal Response to Hurricane Helene," https://www.dtnpf.com/…

-- "NC Farmers Pull Together After Helene," https://www.dtnpf.com/…

-- "People, Livestock Hit Hard by Helene," https://www.dtnpf.com/…

-- "Hurricane Helene Damages Georgia Cattle," https://www.dtnpf.com/…

2. WASDE Friday: On Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. we'll have the USDA Crop Production and April World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report. You'll find our article previewing report expectations earlier in the week. On Friday, our initial WASDE flash story will hit DTN digital platforms just after USDA releases the reports, with updates and commentary throughout the hour. As always, we'll follow with a 12:30 p.m. webinar featuring analysis and commentary, and a chance for you to ask questions. To register for the webinar, go here: https://www.dtn.com/…

3. Dry conditions remain: While the Southeast recovers from torrential rains, the rest of the country remains unusually warm and dry. This is raising soil moisture concerns for fall-planted crops and also upping the potential for wildfires in some areas. A system will move through the north, bringing some rain to the Canadian Prairies and upper U.S., but for most of the country that will only lead to high winds, increasing the fire risk. Be careful with flames and hot surfaces during harvest. For tips on how to prevent, as well as fight, fires that may start from combines or other machinery in the field, here's a list of suggestions: https://www.dtnpf.com/…. We wish you a safe harvest.

4. Conservation program updates: USDA is expected to discuss the latest conservation program wrinkles; watch for reporting on those opportunities.

5. Weekly economic reports: Monday at 10 a.m. the latest Grain Inspections numbers are out, then new Consumer Credit figures at 2 p.m. followed at 3 p.m. with the USDA NASS weekly Crop Progress report. Tuesday we'll watch the 7:30 a.m. release of U.S. Trade Deficit figures. Wednesday reports include 9 a.m. reveal of Wholesale Inventories, with the 10 a.m. EIA Weekly Petroleum report, which includes ethanol numbers. At 2 p.m. the Broiler Hatchery figures are out. Thursday is a busy morning, with 7:30 a.m. release of Grain Export Sales, Initial Jobless Claims, Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Core CPI. Friday begins at 7:30 a.m. with the Producer Price Index (PPI), and Core CPI. At 9 a.m. Consumer Sentiment is released. Then at 11 a.m. comes the USDA Crop Production and October WASDE reports, and at 2:30 pm, the CFTC's Commitment of Traders report.

Bonus DTN Content: DTN Farm Business Editor Katie Dehlinger discusses recent interest rates changes, impact and outlook with Reporter's Notebook Host Elaine Shein. You can see the video at https://www.dtnpf.com/….
